PEI in the Winter

“There’s nothing to do in PEI in the winter!”  I bet you’ve heard that before. Well I’m here to bust that myth!

[This blog post is sponsored by Mill River Resort and North Cape Coastal Drive, but opinions are my own.]

Why Choose PEI in the Winter:

We recently went to visit the North Cape Coastal Drive region of PEI! It was our first time exploring the area and we can’t wait to go back! After our drive to PEI, we were hungry, so we stopped at Backwoods Burgers for lunch. It is a family friendly restaurant with a relaxed, eclectic atmosphere. We ordered some burgers, buffalo chicken fries, and the Instagram worthy onion ring tower! It hit the spot & then we were ready to head to our accommodations for the weekend!

We stayed at Mill River Resort, PEI’s 4-star, 4-season resort!  Our family of four had an excelled winter getaway with the Fun & Frosty Package.  It’s a two night package that comes with a Family Winter Activity Pass and all rentals included!

If I’m being honest, I’ve never considered going to PEI in the winter, but this weekend has me convinced that it should be on everyone’s radar!

1. Embrace the Beauty of PEI in the Winter

So many times we want to escape the East Coast Winter, but if you truly embrace it, you will see how beautiful and fun it can be.  We tend to hibernate in the winter, but getting outdoors is great for your physical and mental health.  Staying at Mill River Resort gives you an opportunity to try out so many winter activities including cross country skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing, tubing and disk golf.  The fresh air and activities will leave you feeling happy and refreshed.  The best part – if you get the Fun & Frosty package it includes a Family Winter Activity Pass with rentals included! The only thing you need to worry about bringing are your own ice skates!

2. Everything in One Place

One of my favourite things about Mill River Resort is that everything is in one place!  There’s no having to drive anywhere – everything you need and all your activities are within walking distance!  This is great for when you have young kids like us!  After a snow activity we would just go back to our room to take off our snow gear and head to the restaurant or on to the next activity.

3. Back up Plan

We had great weather while we were at Mill River Resort, but if the weather is not cooperating there are still plenty of activities to do indoors!  There is a large indoor pool with a super fun twisty slide for the kids (or adults!).  My kids loved the room filled with bouncy castles – every kids dream!  We stopped in there all three days to let them burn some energy!  Make sure to bring in a bottle of water, because your kids will need it!

4. Quality Time

I absolutely loved that our time at Mill River Resort was filled with true quality time.  What is a better bonding moment than learning a new activity with the whole family!  None of us had ever played disk golf, but we got out there and learned together. Our son who is an avid hockey player even coached his little sister on the ice and taught her to stand up on her skates and take her first few strides by herself.  A moment they will never forget.

5. Do Something out of the Ordinary

On the way home from Mill River resort, we did something I would guess very few people have ever done. We snowshoed with goats! The Beach Goats are available to visit all year ’round! I have been following them for a while and knew they liked to go paddle boarding in the summer, but had no idea they liked to snowshoe in the winter! We had so much fun snowshoeing down to the beach with them, walking out onto a frozen Northumberland Straight, and even roasting marshmallows at the end! As we were walking back to the car, Lucia (who is four years old) turned to me and said “This is the best day of my whole life!” It was definitely an experience to remember!
